Puppy choken, beaten until vomiting blood
Louisville, KY (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Oct 7, 2010
County: Jefferson

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Matthew Schmitz

A Louisville man has been charged with torturing an animal after police say he tried to strangle a 14-week-old pit bull to death.

A police report obtained by Fox 41 News states that 24-year-old Matthew Schmitz of the 5500 block of Hunt Club Lane was in an argument with his girlfriend Thursday afternoon when his pit bull puppy defecated on his clothes.

That's when, the police report states, it got physical.

Police say Schmitz admitted to hitting his dog in the head and neck area. The arrest warrant also states that Schmitz, "intentionally tortured their 14-week-old male pit bull puppy by strangling the puppy and throwing the puppy in the air to the point the puppy was coughing up blood and having difficulty breathing."

Police say the dog was taken to Jefferson Animal Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and "the severity of the puppy's condition alarmed the staff" and they called Metro Animal Services.

Schmitz is charged with torture of a dog or cat -- a misdemeanor.
