Horse beaten with baseball bat
Hebron, NY (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Sep 4, 2010
County: Washington

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: James W. Martindale

A man was charged with animal cruelty on Monday for allegedly hitting a horse with a baseball bat earlier this month, State Police said.

James W. Martindale, 41, of Route 22, Hebron, allegedly hit the mare with the bat on the first weekend of September at a nearby Route 22 farm because the animal refused to be loaded into a trailer, Greenwich barracks Trooper Kevin Saunders said.

Martindale also allegedly dragged the horse with an electric winch, Saunders said.

A Granville veterinarian later euthanized the animal, but that was due to a previous injury from an infected cut on its leg, Saunders said.

Martindale is to appear at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 in Hebron Town Court to answer the charge.

Hebron animal control officer Jessica Barrett also assisted in the investigation.
