18 dogs abandoned at home, more found dead
Waldron, AR (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Sep 30, 2010
County: Scott

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

The Sebastian County Humane Society said their animal cruelty investigators found animal remains during a rescue operation at a Scott County home.

"It's sad, but it makes me feel good that I can help them," said Bekah Trotter, with the Sebastian County Humane Society.

Trotter said 18 dogs were taken from the property. She said the dogs' owner moved and left the dogs to die.

"They had been in the cages so long that we couldn't even open the gates," Trotter said. "They were stuck, so we had to break them out pretty much."

Trotter said several of the dogs will likely have to be euthanized because their health is so bad. She said several of the rescued dogs have skin and eye infections and are un-socialized.

"They're suffering, and we just can't let them stay in the condition that they're in," Trotter said.

Investigators said two dog carcasses were also found on the property. A warrant allowed authorities to enter the home Thursday. Trotter said inside more dead animals were discovered.

"We found one carcass and probably another four or five bones and fur," Trotter said "They had just been left in the house to die."

The rescued dogs will be in an isolation area at the Sebastian County Humane Society for days. Medical and temperament evaluations will be conducted, and Trotter said some of the animals will likely go up for adoption.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department said their investigation into the dogs' owner is pending. They said the animal cruelty case will be handed over to the county's prosecuting attorney.

"The sheriff's department has been in contact with her. She's willing to cooperate and pay for their medical treatment and things like that," Trotter said." Yet she couldn't do that when they were in her care."
