Police are trying to find the person who shot and killed a dog in Chalmette, according to St. Bernard Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve Cannizaro.

Around 8:35 p.m., the dog, a 12-year-old Labrador named Teddy, was shot Sept. 2 while playing with another dog on a lawn near 58 West Claiborne Square, according Chief Deputy Sheriff James Pohlmann.

"The dog was believed at the time to be a stray because he wasn't wearing a collar or I.D. tag. But the owners, Kim and Mike England of Violet -- who said the animal had a collar when he disappeared in July and also had an identity chip injected into his body - didn't learn of the shooting until Wednesday, Sept. 8," said Cannizaro.

After learning of the shooting days after in the incident, Kim England was told that her dog had been euthanized at the St. Bernard Animal Shelter, according to police.

"A small caliber bullet entered one of the dog's hind legs and passed through his stomach before exiting. He survived several days but had to be euthanized because of his suffering, officials at the shelter said," Cannizaro said in a statement.

The shooter would face charges of aggravated cruelty to an animal, which is a felony, Pohlmann said.

"We can't have people firing guns,'' he said. "It's bad enough an animal was killed. The shot could have gone anywhere, including hitting someone in their home.''

"A woman at the scene of the shooting said she saw the dog playing with another dog on a lawn and she went back into her home but soon heard the injured animal crying out in pain and found him shot. No witnesses said they saw the actual shooting," said Cannizaro.
