13 horses seized from alleged neglect
Rose Township, MI (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Sep 8, 2010
County: Oakland

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

Thirteen horses were confiscated from an Oakland County farm on Wednesday, and their owner was ticketed for 19 counts of animal cruelty, Oakland County Animal Control officials said.

With the assistance of Michigan State Police, animal control officers visited the owner's farm to investigate a tip that 19 horses were undernourished, said Larry Obrecht, manager of the Oakland County Animal Shelter.

Animal control officers told the owner to improve the condition of her horses by the time of their next visit, Obrecht said.

After a month and several visits and warnings from animal control officers, the owner failed to improve the condition of the horses, officials said.

One horse had to be put down, and five horses were placed with new owners by the woman, officials said.

The 13 horses -- some were emaciated -- are being cared for at another location.

Obrecht said it is standard procedure in animal cruelty investigations to give the owner several opportunities to improve the condition of the animals prior to seeking a court order to confiscate them.

Anyone wishing to help feed and care for the horses may send donations to the Oakland County Animal Shelter, 1700 Brown Road, Auburn Hills, MI 48326, or go to - Sept 9, 2010
