On 8/22/2010, Chesapeake ACO K. Perry was called to an address in the 700 block of Laurel Avenue. The female complainant alleged that her husband Michael Rivera had beaten one cat and kicked a second cat. Both animals were presently at Greenbrier Emergency Clinic receiving treatment.

ACO Perry conducted an investigation. She found that 10 year old Salome had been hospitalized for head trauma. Thirteen year old Simka had been hospitalized for head trauma as well as a severe femoral fracture. This leg was subsequently amputated.

ACO Perry charged Michael Rivera with two counts of cruelty to animals. The case was heard in Chesapeake General District Court - Criminal Division on August 31, 2010.

Rivera was convicted and sentenced 90 days. Sixty days were suspended. Rivera will serve 30 days, time to be served on weekends. Rivera will be on probation for 5 years, and is ordered to have no direct contact with any companion animals.
