Cat neglected at city shelter, left to die
Dallas, TX (US)

Incident Date: Monday, May 3, 2010
County: Denton

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Tyrone McGill

Tyrone McGill, a veteran city of Dallas employee and manager at the city's animal shelter, has been charged with felony animal cruelty in connection with the death of cat in early May.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, a cat somehow became trapped in a wall in the shelter in early May.

On May 3, employees heard the cat crying and scratching in an effort to get free and asked McGill and supervisors what to do about the situation.

On May 4, shelter employee Kimberly Killebrew asked McGill again what could be done to free the cat, and McGill said he would handle it, the affidavit states.

Several more days went by and the cat remained in the wall, scratching and crying.

On Saturday, May 8, Killebrew could still hear the cat moving, although it was no longer crying.

Killebrew again asked McGill what would be done and he responded that ceiling tiles had been removed to try to help the cat free itself, the affidavit states.

When she pushed the issue a day later, McGill told her flatly that the shelter's wall would not be cut to free the animal, according to the affidavit.

The cat died in the wall and the stench became unbearable. Only then was the wall cut, the affidavit states.

McGill "accepted responsibility and indicated he would take care of the problem and permitted the cat to die in a cruel manner," the affidavit states.
