County: Greene

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Virginia Gambriel

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

A woman who once was ordered by a judge to keep no more than three animals was charged on Wednesday with 75 counts of misdemeanor animal abuse. The charges against Virginia Gambriel of Polk County stem from a raid on property in northern Greene County last March 29.

Law enforcement officers and the Humane Society of Missouri rescued 40 dogs, 13 cats, 10 gerbils, seven rabbits, two doves, two turtles and one chinchilla that were malnourished, matted with feces and dirt, and living in filthy conditions in a home belonging to Brady Gambriel of Bolivar. During the raid at 10081 N. Farm Road 165, which was executed with a search warrant, Virginia Gambriel was at the home, and was arrested.

A Polk County judge sent Gambriel to jail for a probation violation a few days after the raid. Gambriel was on probation for child endangerment after a raid at her property near Pleasant Hope in August 2008. Some of Gambriel's grandchildren were staying in filthy conditions with the animals at that property, which is at 2021 E. 562nd Road in Polk County. A condition of her probation was that she keep no more than one dog, one cat, and one bird.

Last April, Gambriel pleaded guilty for one count of animal abuse and one count of animal neglect for the raid in 2008. She received a 15-day and a 30-day jail sentence for those misdemeanors.

The 75 misdemeanor charges filed on Wednesday each could carry a jail sentence up to one year. A judge issued a warrant for her arrest and set her bond at $5,000, with a condition that she not keep any animals, and submit her property to inspections to make sure she's complying.

Case Updates

A Greene County woman with a previous conviction for animal abuse has again been found guilty in court â€" this time to 75 counts of misdemeanor animal abuse.

Virginia Gambriel, of Pleasant Hope, was arrested in March after authorities found more than 75 animals on her propertyâ€"including 40 dogs, 13 cats, 10 rabbits, two doves, two turtles and a chinchilla.

She was convicted of 75 counts of misdemeanor animal abuse during a one-day trial on Jan. 5. She's scheduled to be sentenced in the case on Feb. 7.

This marks the second time Gambriel has been convicted of animal abuse.

In August 2008, 370 animals were removed from her Pleasant Hope home, along with six children ages 10 months to 12 years.

Gambriel was sentenced to 45 days probation for two counts of child endangerment. She was barred from caring for children or more than three animals.

As a condition of a previous conviction, Gambriel was not allowed to own more than one dog, one cat or one bird. According to online court documents, Gambriel admitted to violating her probation.

Gambriel was ordered to serve the 90 days of her original suspended sentence in Polk County jail for her previous conviction in the previous animal hoarding case.

Gambriel is currently out of jail after posting $5,000 bond.

Virginia Gambriel, arrested twice in the past two years in connection with animal neglect allegations, was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor counts of animal abuse.

Online court records show Gambriel, who has a history of problems caring for animals and children, was in the Greene County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $5,000 bond. She had been ordered to have no animals under her care, and must submit to random inspections to ensure compliance.

In August 2008, 370 animals were removed from her Pleasant Hope home, along with six children ages 10 months to 12 years.

In November, Gambriel was sentenced to 45 days probation for two counts of child endangerment. She was barred from caring for children or more than three animals.

In March 2009, she was arrested again when authorities found more than 75 animals on her property.

The new charges stem from the March 29 incident when sheriff's deputies served a search warrant at what was thought to be an abandoned home and found Gambriel with scores of animals, including 40 dogs, 13 cats, 10 rabbits, two doves, two turtles and a chinchilla.
