People living in southeast Portland said they've discovered decapitated cats in their streets and yards in the past few weeks.

Leslie Christianson said she found the remains of a cat on a neighbor's lawn while walking her dog near Southeast Ogden Street and 42nd Avenue on Monday morning.

"It was just the lower half of a cat. So, it was just the meaty part of the vertebrae. Part of the fur was kind of exposed," Christianson said.

A Multnomah County animal control officer picked up the body Tuesday morning and said it looked like the work of a coyote or bird of prey, Christianson said. A spokesman for the agency said a veterinarian will examine the remains.

Julie Crosgrove's pet cat was found dead July 4. She said two other cats were found dead near the area of Southeast Knapp Street and 30th Avenue earlier this month.

"Our cat, who had been missing four days, they found his head in the middle of the street down there on Knapp (Street)," she said.

In the nearby Westmoreland neighborhood, a woman reported that she found a cat with a severed head in her yard on June 16.

She took it to the Oregon Humane Society in Portland where a medical investigators told her it looked "highly suspicious for human involvement."

Residents said they're concerned about the repeat incidents.

"Too many things are happening now to the point of, OK, somebody's up to something," Crosgrove said.
