More than two dozen dogs are in the Mobile County Animal Shelter after they were confiscated from a suspected dog fighting ring in northern Mobile County. The case has resulted in overcrowding that could lead to the euthanization of other dogs at the shelter.
Twenty-six pit bulls were brought to the shelter Friday. The suspected ring was discovered on Red Fox Road near the border between Mobile and Washington Counties. The shelter is required to hold the animals for the duration of the investigation, which could take a month or more.
The dogs have taken up two of the county's three kennels. That means some of the adoptable animals may have to be put down Monday. The situation has led to a plea on the shelter's Facebook page.
The agency posted: "We are required to make room for these dogs so that means we are in desperate need of finding homes for all of our adoptable animals."
Officials say they are also required by law to give strays priority by holding them for at least seven days. So when the shelter runs out of space the adoptable animals are the first to be euthanized. On normal business days the shelter gets an average of 20 animals a day. That means the overcrowding could reach a critical point as early as Monday. Twenty-four animals were adopted Saturday, but the shelter says it's not enough. References |
