Hoarding - thirty cats seized
Washington Court House, OH (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, May 26, 2010
County: Fayette

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Thirty cats were found in an apartment on Highland Avenue Wednesday following a complaint filed with the Health department.

According to reports, Environmental Health Officer Rick Garrison responded to an apartment at Camelia Apartments, 820 Highland Ave., at 1 p.m. Wednesday on a report of possible animal hoarding and found the cats living in one room of an apartment.

The Record-Herald is not releasing names because the couple who live in the apartment have not yet been charged with any offense. The property is owned by Lagos Apartment 3, Inc., Springfield.

According to Humane Society spokesman Lee Shrader, the animals were without adequate food or litter. Many were wild and many others were sick, she said

"It's animal hoarding at its worst," she said.

The cats reportedly had torn up the walls and feces covered the floor, health department reports state, and the odor could be smelled 60 feet from the apartments.

Twenty five of the cats were removed by the Humane Society, Shrader said, and because of their health and feral condition, had to be euthanized.

The residents have until June 21 to clean the apartment up or it will be condemned.

Shrader said that the residents will be visited again to ensure that the animal hoarding does not begin again as part of the Humane Society's mission to care for abused or neglected animals.
