Dog found dead in garage
Fremont, OH (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, May 15, 2010
County: Sandusky

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

A small dead dog was discovered in a garage, and authorities are investigating.

According to Fremont police reports, police responded to the 300 block of Elliot Street to help a man get into his newly purchased property. They found the dog decaying on the floor.

Animal cruelty investigator Denny Hammond said the dog, described as a Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix, has been dead and decaying for at least a week.

He said he's looking into possible charges.

"It's being investigated," Hammond said. "I got a whole bunch of information."

When asked about animal cruelty charges, Hammond responded, "If we can prove it."

Starvation was not believed to have been the cause of death, Hammond said. However, there was no dog dish nearby.

A power cord was located within inches of the dog, with two wired ends facing the animal. The large green cord ran up a wall and was attached to a power socket.

Hammond would not say if electrocution was the official cause of death.

Hammond said he has been to the property before on previous animal calls.

The property owner told police the previous owner, who moved out a few weeks ago, had been coming back to the property sometimes overnight.

The new owner came to check up and found someone had installed a padlock on the front door.

After providing documentation showing he owned the property, officers were able to cut the lock without damaging the door.
