Troy police said Friday they are investigating the recent poisoning of a family's pet dog.
According to a news release from police, the incident happened on Prospect Street between May 6-7. During this time, someone threw rat poison wrapped inside bacon onto a lawn.
The victim in the case saw the pet trying to eat the substance, and stopped it before the entire amount was consumed.
When asked for comment, Officer Floyd McDonald said the dog became sick, and was taken to the veterinarian, who saved the animal at a considerable cost.
He said the motive behind the poisoning remains unknown.
Police said they are asking residents in the borough to monitor what their pets are eating, and be aware of possible malicious acts by people in the area.
Those seeing suspicious people or activities are asked to call police at (570) 297-2423 or the Bradford County Communications Center at (570) 265-9101.
Police said that anyone convicted of cruelty to animals may face up to five years in prison as well as fines of up to $10,000.
"Poison is a bad way to go and it's a pretty serious criminal offense," McDonald said.
He noted about a year ago in the same area there was a similar complaint of cats being poisoned. If you have information on this case, please contact: (570) 297-2423
