Doctors said the dog had suffered slash wounds to the cheeks, nose and right eye.

Police said the attack happened in the 3000 block of Wylie Avenue. Investigators said the shepherd-pit bull mix was attacked by a neighbor with a history of mental illness.

Veterinarians are working to save the life of a dog viciously attacked by a man wielding a machete. It happened Tuesday night in Baltimore.

That dog is now in the critical care unit of a local animal hospital and the man accused of attacking her was arrested and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

Eighteen-month-old shepherd/pit bull mix Akasha is in a struggle to survive. The dog was playing in her own fenced-in yard on Wylie Street when police say a neighbor attacked her with a machete.

Nakitta McLean and her daughter were home when it happened.

"We hear our dog yelp really loud and we thought something was going on so she runs outside and there's a man in the back and I'm hearing my child scream, `Mommy, Mommy, this man is trying to kill my dog!'" McLean said.

She raced outside to see Levar Bailey, 32, holding what police describe as an 18- to 24-inch long machete.

"It was really long and bloody. You could barely see any metal on it. All you could see is blood and chunks," she said.

The McLeans say the man came through their yard holding the machete and came down the alley after the dog. At the end of the alley, he attacked Akasha with a machete.

"He yells obscenities at me and says my dog tried to bite his daughter. There's no child in the backyard. It was rainy yesterday," McLean said.

Police arrested Bailey a few doors down and tell WJZ he has a history of mental illness. The entire experience was upsetting to the McLean's children. Their other, normally friendly, dog that escaped injury now hides in the house.

"We're considering moving," McLean said.

"If he did this to a dog, he could do this to a human. For him to be released from a mental hospital, clearly he has some problems and clearly he was released too early," said Jamon McLean.

Veterinarians say Akasha's surgeries are going to cost into the thousands of dollars, far more than the McLeans are capable of paying.
