County: Maricopa

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Rosa Maria Salas Carrera

A woman faces animal cruelty charges for allegedly not providing medical treatment to her sick dog who later died.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Animal Cruelty detectives arrested Rosa Maria Salas-Carrera, 28, who is an illegal immigrant.

An MCSO detective responded to a call from a neighbor who said that he or she was concerned about a 'very sick dog' that had wandered into her yard in Tolleson.

Further investigation led to identifying Salas-Carrera as the dog's owner. She reportedly explained that she knew the dog was sick but did not get him medical attention because she could not afford the cost.

The dog was rushed to an emergency medical pet clinic in Peoria but died while in the front seat of the patrol car.

Salas-Carrera was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail and faces one count of animal cruelty knowingly subjecting an animal to cruel mistreatment, and one count of animal cruelty failure to provide medical attention necessary to prevent protracted suffering to any animal under the person's custody or control.

The MCSO Animal Cruelty Unit was launched over 10 years ago.
