County: El Paso

Three men face animal cruelty charges after sheriff's deputies seized 60 roosters and hens Saturday evening at a suspected cockfighting arena in Montana Vista, El Paso County sheriff's officials said.

Following a tip, deputies arrived to hear roosters crowing and numerous cars parked outside a home at the corner of Santiesteban Lane and Buntline Drive, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Some of the attendees tried to run when deputies approached, but more than 30 people were detained after deputies surrounded the site where a makeshift arena had been built out of plywood.

Investigators allegedly found items used in cockfighting. Animal control officers seized 30 roosters and 30 hens.

Three men were arrested on cruelty to livestock charges. They are Jose Luis Trejo, 26, of the 14600 block of Annegret; Jesus Garcia, 23, of the 14900 block of Karen Way; and Moses Lozoya, 30, 14000 block of Santiesteban. They were released from jail Sunday morning after posting bail of $1,500 each.

Six other men were arrested on traffic and other warrants. An investigation into the alleged cockfighting continues.
