Veterinarians are calling it a remarkable recovery. After hours of reconstructive surgery and being in a coma for days, a Fayetteville puppy that was beaten badly is on the mend.

Three-month-old Uncle Sam, a friendly loyal boxer puppy, was brought into the Dogwood Animal Hospital with a broken leg, cracked ribs, and clinging to life.

According to emergency reports, the owner's boyfriend was intoxicated and when he caught the puppy slipping up while potty-training, he threw him up against the wall.

By the time veterinarian Jim Williams got to him, Uncle Sam had a swollen nose, ears full of blood, broken teeth and swelling around the brain.

According to Animal Control, the man who beat the dog could face animal abuse and cruelty charges.

"I think (an owner) has to be prepared for the things that puppies go through as far as the destructive phases, potty-training and that type of thing. If your tolerance is low for that sort of thing, then don't have a pet," veterinarian assistant Kelly Pratt said.

Uncle Sam is expected to make a complete recovery and spend his days chasing balls and fetching papers.
