Wounded dog found nearly dead, fighting suspected
Boston, MA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Dec 15, 2009
County: Suffolk

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A veteran Hub animal cruelty officer says that a battered and bloody pit bull left to die in a wooded area of Hyde Park on Sunday night is the worst case of abuse he’s seen in his 35 years on the force.

“I’m amazed people can be this cruel to an animal,” said Lt. Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

“This dog was dumped there to die,” Borgal said. “These people don’t feel this dog feels any pain, and they don’t care about its suffering.”

Borgal said Turtle, so named because she was found in a field near Turtle Pond Parkway, was a good-natured female whose temperament made her a natural as a “bait dog,” a canine punching bag used to train vicious pit bulls for their deadly competition.

When police found her shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday, she was bleeding from more than 60 fresh wounds and was almost lifeless. Turtle was so emaciated she was burning off her own body fat to survive.
