Hunting dogs abandoned at shelter
Snow Hill, NC (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Feb 14, 2010
County: Greene

Disposition: Not Charged

Person of Interest: Wilbert Davis

Thirteen hunting dogs were abandoned at the Lenoir County Animal Shelter. Law officers say the man who owned them turned himself in late Thursday night.

Investigators say Wilbert Davis of Greene County confessed he abandoned the dogs Sunday night.

Davis is not in jail and hasn’t been charged with anything yet. Authorities are still waiting for a vet report in this investigation.

On Friday morning, Greene County Animal Control went to Davis’ home along Pope Farm Road. Authorities say the retired truck driver was struggling financially and kept the dogs in a nearby woods.

Animal Control Ofc. Randy Hawkins says Davis couldn’t afford food and medical care for the animals, which ruled out the theory that Davis starved the dogs to make them hunt more aggressively.

Ofc. Hawkins says Davis told authorities it was time to find the 13 dogs a more suitable home, which is why he chose the Lenoir County Animal Shelter.

In addition, investigators say they found no evidence of animal abuse at his home.

Currently, Greene County Animal Control says Davis could face up to 13 misdemeanor counts of not feeding and caring for the dogs.

So far three of the 13 dogs are with new families.
