Dog found with embedded collar, another starving
Somerton, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jan 25, 2010
County: Yuma

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: adult

Annette Lagunas, director of operations for Humane Society of Yuma, issued a press release, regarding a case that has resulted in two citations of animal cruelty.

Jan. 25, 2010, officers responded to a call from a concerned neighbor who found a pit bull dog with a wound around its neck indicative of a chain or collar becoming imbedded. A second severely emaciated pit bull that was nursing four puppies was later found at the same residence.

The dog weighed 39 pounds, nearly half the normal weight of a dog her size, according to the release.

"The owner claimed that he had found the first dog a month before with a cut on its neck," Lagunas said in the release. "He admitted to having owned the second dog for years, stating that he spent a lot of time out of the area and trusted the dog's care to his wife and a friend."

According to the release, officers took possession of both pit bulls and the four puppies. HSOY officers, in conjunction with the Somerton Police Department, cited the owner with two counts of animal cruelty.
