A New Britain teenager who entered his pit bull in a dog fight began clubbing the opposing dog with a baseball bat when his dog started losing, police said.

Cesar D. Santos, 17, was arrested on an animal cruelty charge.

Santos' dog, Scarface, began losing the fight, prompting Santos to break the winning dog's rear right leg, according to police reports.

"Now that his leg is broken, you can get him, Scarface," witnesses said they heard Santos say.

The owner of the injured dog reportedly did not know about the fight.

The injured pit bull was taken to a veterinarian but was later euthanized due to the extent of the injury.

Santos was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court July 28.

Case Updates

Santos will be back in court Monday, but not alone. Members of several animal rights groups have said that they will be at the courthouse to demand that Santos get the maximum penalty. At least one group, PETA, urged the Hartford County States Attorney to vigorously prosecute Santos
