The Reed family is mourning the loss of their dog "Koda," after someone apparently deliberately shot and killed him in the front yard of their home Tuesday morning.

They are shocked, as it all happened in broad daylight, and so far no one has come forward.

As sisters McKenzie Cross and McKayla Reed got ready for school, they never thought it would be the last time they'd see their dog alive.

"He was everything to me," 7-year-old McKayla said hours later.

Every morning, they let Koda outside in a fenced area, and normally he goes back inside the house when he is called. But not this morning.

The girls' mom, Kristi Reed, said it all happened within the span of 20 minutes. McKenzie went outside to start the car, and in the process, found her dog was dead.

Reed recalled, "McKenzie came back inside screaming, 'Koda's dead! Koda's dead!' and I was like, 'What?!?! Oh my gosh!' So I ran outside, and he was laying on the grass."

They say a BB pellet was laying next to the Pomeranian's body. Someone had shot him between the eyes.

Neighbors are surprised, saying it's normally a safe and quiet place.

One man said, "It's sad to see it does happen, because you know, kids and their pets are just really close. That's just sad, to see something like that happen, to hear of it."

McKayla is devastated. She said through tears that no other dog could replace her Koda.

"I used to let him in every day, and I used to always cuddle up with him," she said. "I used to make forts with him when we lived in our old house."

The family admits Koda was a "barker," something that could have pushed someone over the edge. But with Prineville police now investigating, it's also something that could bring charges.

"I hope someone in the future ... would tell them the dog was annoying them, (rather) than to take it upon themselves to kill an innocent animal," she said.

Prineville police ask you to call them if you saw or heard anything Tuesday morning in the area of Northwest Fifth Street.

Case Updates

A Prineville family mourning the loss of their dog, shot and killed in their front yard, had reason to smile Wednesday night, bringing home a new puppy provided by a Redmond NewsChannel 21 viewer touched by their plight.

Kristi Reed said her two daughters were thrilled with the black Pomeranian puppy, named Bentley, which looks much like their beloved Koda, shot and killed in the front yard of their home Tuesday morning.

"The couple said they believe in 'paying it forward,' and told us that we had to do the same," Reed told NewsChannel 21 in an upbeat e-mail, complete with photos. "And we will! We are so thankful for their kindness and generosity, we promise to pay it forward!"

In an e-mail from Reed and her daughters, they added, "We also want to thank all the people who wrote in today with their kind words. We will never forget our 'Koda bear,' but having Bentley will help ease the pain."
