County: Virginia Beach City

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Aaron Babb

A Virginia Beach man has been charged with animal cruelty. Police say Aaron Babb kicked his wife's dog into a wall and dumped it in the dumpster where he lives. "It's mind boggling, as to what would enrage a person so much that he's going to kick a dog hard enough to kill a dog," said Adam Bernstein, Virginia Beach Police Department.

Investigators say the crime happened inside his home in the Diamond Springs apartment complex in Virginia Beach.

Babb told police he had been drinking when he noticed his wife's dog - a Pomeranian - had an accident. "Because the dog soiled on the carpet, for some reason it enraged him enough that he kicked the dog into the wall," Bernstein said.

Police are not sure how many times Babb kicked the dog. But they say he admitted knowing the dog was dead. Instead of trying to get help, investigators say he just walked over to the dumpster and threw the dog into it.

A couple neighbors heard what had happened and called police.

"They're disturbed. The emotions run high when they hear about animal abuse cases, especially dogs, because there are so many dog lovers out there."

Babb was arrested and charged with Felony Animal Cruelty. Tonight he is behind bars while many are still trying to understand why anyone would want to kill the family dog.

Bernstein added, "I know the guy was intoxicated but there's no level of intoxication that can make it right for a human being to abuse an animal like that."

Babb declined to be interviewed. NewsChannel 3 has been told Babb had another dog which was taken by Animal Control.
