6 macaque monkeys kept illegally
Liberty, MS (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jan 1, 2010
County: Amite

Charges: Summary
Disposition: Civil penalty imposed

Person of Interest: Vicki Lorio

A Feb. 3, 2010 hearing has been scheduled for a Louisiana woman who has been cited by the state of Mississippi for keeping 12 monkeys without a permit at a house in Liberty.

Maj. Lane Ball, a state wildlife enforcement officer, says Vicki Lorio of Baton Rouge was charged Friday with six counts after six macaque monkeys, which are on the list of dangerous animals under Mississippi law, were found. Ball said permits are required to keep the macaques.

Ball tells the McComb Enterprise-Journal that the six monkeys are possibly spider monkeys. He says the monkeys were kept in cages, either separately or in pairs, and all appeared to be well-fed.

The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges.
