A student was arrested at the Community College of Allegheny County facility on Stanwix Street, Downtown, yesterday [Jan 15. 2010] and charged with two counts of animal cruelty.
The charges against Samantha Greene, 21, of North Point Breeze, go back to Nov. 30, when a dead dog was found on a fire escape landing and a badly emaciated dog was found inside the McPherson Boulevard apartment where she used to live.
Pittsburgh police, Pittsburgh Animal Control officers and officers from the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society investigated. Investigators said Ms. Greene and Shaun Darnell Cobb II, 21, had been evicted and moved out, leaving two pit bulls behind.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Mr. Cobb, said Pittsburgh Police Officer Christine Luffey. He will be charged with two counts of animal cruelty.
Case UpdatesPolice are issuing a warning to pet owners after two January incidents involving the discovery of dead and severely emaciated dogs inside Pittsburgh homes.
Police said Samantha Greene, 21, left both of her dogs inside a Homewood apartment after she moved out.
"Abandoning these animals will not be tolerated. If you move from your residence, and you leave your animal to die, we will find you and we will arrest you," said Christine Luffey, of the Pittsburgh Police Department.
One dog was discovered dead on top of a pile of garbage.
"This crime is unacceptable. It's very cruel and it's heartless. They suffered at least a week. Between seven and 12 days is a fair estimate."
The second pit bull barely survived.
"They were severely emaciated. You could see just about every bone in their body," said Luffey.
Police have also charged 21-year-old Shaun Cobb.
The situation has become and increasingly familiar one.
Two dogs were discovered inside a foreclosed home on Freeland Street on Jan. 3.
One dog was found dead, the other badly emaciated and barely able to walk.
Police have identified Ronell Oakes as a suspect.
"When you take an animal into your home, you are responsible for the duty of care that includes providing that animal with food, water, proper veterinary care in a sanitary environment," said Luffey. | Source: ABC 4 - Jan 15, 2010 Update posted on Jan 18, 2010 - 12:36PM |
