Charges of animal cruelty and abandonment were filed Thursday against Chad M. Moore, the Clermont County horse trainer linked to the death of at least 10 of the animals on a Tate Township farm.
Judge James A. Shriver of Municipal Court set bail at $100,000 on the four counts, two of each charge. Moore remains jailed in lieu of bail in two unrelated cases.
Chief Animal Control Officer Debra Wood filed the charges. The investigation continues, and additional charges are expected, according to court records.
Each charge of cruelty or abandonment that might be filed could bring up to 90 days in jail. Moore also could be fined up to $750 on each count.
A hearing date hasn't been scheduled, but Moore will be busy in court next week through next month in other cases.
Judge Jerry R. McBride of Common Pleas Court has scheduled a Jan. 11 hearing for alleged probation violations in a case involving nonsupport of Moore's children. He remains jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail in that case, which could bring up to a year in prison
On Jan. 12, Moore is to appear before Judge Anthony W. Brock of Municipal Court in a pending theft case. It involves hay valued at less than $500, according to defense attorney R. Daniel Hannon, who is representing Moore in the nonsupport case.
Moore, 39, pleaded not guilty Saturday in the theft case. He also is to appear before Brock on an allegation of probation violation related to a 2009 case in which he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Bail was set Saturday at $100,000 in both those Municipal Court cases by Shriver.
A Feb. 24 hearing has been scheduled for Moore before Magistrate Penny Gates in Domestic Relations Court on a contempt charge related to child support.
Moore failed to pay at least $229.85 a month to support his children, according to an affidavit filed by a probation officer.
He was arrested Dec. 31, several days after animal control officers obtained a search warrant and discovered the extent of the problem at the farm at 2200 Donald Road. Six malnourished horses, a pony and a donkey were rescued.
Case UpdatesA man accused of neglecting and abusing horses in Clermont County entered a guilty plea to some charges this afternoon and was sentenced to six months in prison.
39 year old Chad Moore was arrested two months ago after several days on the run. Animal Control officers say they found ten of Moore's horses dead and eight other animals starving during a raid at a Tate Township farm. The raid came after weeks of complaints by neighbors and passersby.
Moore faced 12 counts in all including animal cruelty and abandonment. Today, Moore pled guilty to six counts of abandoning animals. The other charges were dismissed. The case of horse neglect in Clermont County has prompted River Downs to take action to prevent future horse deaths or injuries.
The race track plans to leave an open stall where owners can surrender their horses if they can no longer care for them.
In December 2009, 12 horses died because of severe malnutrition and neglect in Clermont Co.
Another four continue their recovery.
