more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Kitten thrown against floor, dies
Arlington Heights, IL (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Aug 16, 2009
County: Cook

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Kevin Colabuono

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A 25-year-old Arlington Heights man was ordered held on bond today after he allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend's 4-month-old kitten by throwing it to the floor of his home over the weekend, Arlington Heights police said.

Kevin Colabuono of the 2100 block of South Goebbert Road was arrested and charged Sunday with aggravated cruelty to an animal, a felony, said Arlington Heights Police Sgt. Michael Shabez.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Kay Hanlon ordered Colabuono held on a $10,000 bond, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County State's Attorney's office. He was required to post 10 percent of the bond and he did, she said.

Police were called to the home about 1:09 p.m. Sunday after the man's ex-girlfriend returned to the home and suspected that her kitten "Riley" had been killed, Shabez said.

The woman had broken up with Colabuono a week earlier and left their apartment during that time. When she returned to the home Sunday, she was told by Colabuono that her kitten had died without being given the circumstances of the death, Shabez said.

The woman suspected Colabuono may have killed the kitten and called police, Shabez said.

Colabuono told police he had been angry about the breakup and with the kitten after it urinated on a carpet in the apartment.

He told police that on Saturday, he killed the kitten by grabbing it with both his hands and throwing it onto the floor, Shabez said. The man then wrapped the kitten's body in plastic and discarded it in a garbage dumpster, Shabez said. He led police to the dumpster where they recovered the carcass.

Another cat, which belonged to Colabuono's, was taken to an animal shelter, Shabez said. The judge ruled that Colabuono was not to have any contact with any animals and refused to let him have his cat back, Shabez said.

Colabuono's next court date was set for Sept. 17 at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, Shabez said.

Case Updates

An Arlington Heights man received 30 months probation after pleading guilty to a charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal in Rolling Meadows Third Municipal District on Monday.

Kevin Colabuono, 25, reportedly became enraged after a 4-month-old kitten belonging to his estranged girlfriend urinated on the floor of his residence in the 2100 block of S. Goebbert Road, last August, authorities said.

Colabuono slammed the kitten to the ground, killing it. He then discarded the remains in a Dumpster. As part of his $10,000 bond, Colabuono was ordered to have no contact with animals.

He must also perform 240 hours of community service as part of his plea, said Assistant State's Attorney Mike Andre.
