A Fort Lauderdale man is facing charges after deputies answering a disturbance call found dozens of animals inside his home. Deputies went to the home at 4180 S.W. 23 St. Monday night in response to a complaint about some sort of disturbance.

The owner of the home, Leonard Grobel, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Neighbors said that Grobel pulled a knife out and threatened neighborhood children.

While deputies were in the home, they saw a large number of animals and called animal control.

Animal control officers reportedly removed 10 dogs and 13 cats from the house.

In addition to the assault charge, Grobel is also charged with 23 counts of animal cruelty. Officers said the animals were well-fed and cared for, but the home was filthy. Neighbors said the stench from the home was unbearable.

He is being held on $5,000 bond.

There is no limit on the number of pets that residents are allowed to have in Broward County, so if Grobel pays a $4,800 fine and cleans up his home, he is likely to get his pets back.

Residents said they are hoping an ordinance will be passed that would limit the number of pets people can keep.
