Two people have been charged with animal abuse, after a severely emaciated dog ended up at the Stevens Swan Humane Society.

Police say both Gregory Patterson, 20, and Lashanta Jackson, 23, both of Wall Street in Utica; are facing the misdemeanor charge of animal abuse.

Dr. Evan Sandler of the Stevens Swan Humane Society says one year-old, bare-boned, Annie was brought into the Humane Society by an animal control officer after her owners clearly neglected her.

"This dog, I don't know if it's been treated or cared for at all," Dr. Sandler said. "On the abuse side, it's (neglect) probably one of the worst cases of abuse a dog can get."

Annie is 15 pounds under weight, has an eye infection, was covered in fleas, and has other scars that led the vet to believe there was other abuse going on. That was only the physical abuse Sandler said, not to mention the psychological abuse.

"The dog when we offered him food, he was very interested, but it was almost like he didn't know what to do with it," Sandler said.

Despite the dogs current condition, Sandler believes once she gets healthy and finds a good home she will be okay.

"This dog is going to be a very good dog, I really do believe so," Sandler said. "Even in the case, the situation, this dog was in, it was still looking to give us kisses. This is not a mean dog. Once she gets some meat on her bones she's going to be very well."

Sandler says Annie will continue to be housed at the Humane Society until she is adopted. Stevens Swan is taking donations for the dog. Anyone wishing to contribute you can send the donation, care of Annie, to Stevens-Swan.

Case Updates

Two dog owners facing charges of animal abuse have pleaded guilty in Utica City Court Friday morning.

Gregory Patterson, 20, and Lashanta Jackson, 23, both of Wall Street in Utica, pleaded guilty to the charge of failure to provide proper substance to "Annie," who was turned over to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society by an animal control officer last month.

The dog came in with an eye infection, was covered in fleas, and has scars that led the vet to believe there was other abuse going on.

"This dog, I don't know if it's been treated or cared for at all," Dr. Evan Sandler of the Stevens Swan Humane Society said when Annie was first brought in. "On the abuse side, it's (neglect) probably one of the worst cases of abuse a dog can get."

Dr. Sandler said that it was not only physical abuse that Annie seemed to suffer, but psychological abuse as well.

"The dog, when we offered her food, he was very interested, but it was almost like he didn't know what to do with it," Sandler said.

Jerry Kraus, spokesperson for the Humane Society, said that Annie has gained more than nine pounds since she was first brought in and close to $2,000 has been donated to the shelter to help care for Annie, who is currently being fostered.

Patterson and Jackson are due back in court on February 11th for sentencing.
