Sick dogs, cats and horses seized
Independence, PA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Oct 13, 2009
County: Beaver

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Wanita Kraus

An Independence Township woman has been charged with animal cruelty by state animal welfare agents who rescued ailing dogs, cats and horses from her property in October.

Wanita Kraus, 47, of 386 Cowpath Drive has received three citations for “failing to provide clean and sanitary conditions and shelter” for dogs and horses that were living on her property.

Conditions at the Kraus residence led to the deaths of two horses and three cats, according to animal welfare people.

Wanita Kraus owned the property with her husband, Charles, who died on Oct. 7.

Officers from the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed four horses, seven dogs and some cats from the property on Oct. 13. They found three dead cats in the house and learned that one horse on the property had been euthanized on Oct. 11 because of untreated leg injuries.

Recently, a mare, one of the four horses removed from the Kraus residence, also had to be euthanized because of untreated leg and foot injuries, according to Regina Martin, a former Pittsburgh police officer who owns the Hog Haven rescue farm. Martin was summoned by PSPCA offers to remove and care for four horses living on the Kraus property.

Martin said that three veterinarians and two farriers examined the mare before it was determined that it should be euthanized.

The PSPCA charges are related to the seven dogs and four horses that were rescued, and were filed before the death of the mare. Liz Williamson, PSPCA spokeswoman, said charges on the cats and the latest horse death are pending the results of veterinary reports for those animals.
