Dog found starving during drug bust
Delray Beach, FL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Oct 21, 2009
County: Palm Beach

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Anthony Crawford

When Delray Beach police busted a man for cocaine possession, they found he'd apparently taken better care of his stash than his dog, according to reports.

Animal control officers didn't get a name, so they nicknamed the dog "Starvin' Marvin."

Anthony Crawford, is being held this morning in lieu of $30,000 bond on the felony animal cruelty charge.

Police who had raided Crawford's home in the 300 block of S.W. 11th Avenue on Oct. 21 found a year and-a-half-old male pit bull mix in a laundry room.

"The dog was so weak that it could barely stand up," Sgt. Michael Moschette wrote in his report.

The animal's rib bones and spine were protruding, and evidence of animal waste on the floor suggested he'd been locked in the room for a while. He had no food and a bucket of water was stagnant and undrinkable, the report said.

Crawford told police the dog needed shots and he did not have the money. He said his uncle had given him the dog a few weeks back and could not tell police when he'd last fed it.

In court this morning, Crawford told Circuit Judge Ted S. Booras the dog wasn't his. But, Booras said, "I'm locked into it," meaning the cruelty charge, and set bail.

Assistant State Attorney Mary Ann Dugger told the judge Crawford had a list of arrests "six pages long;" she said convictions included burglary, grand theft and battery.

Palm Beach County Jail records show Crawford had at least 15 arrests between 1998 and 2008.

Records show Crawford had left the jail Oct. 22 on the original Oct. 21 arrest after posting $3,000 bond. Those charges were cocaine possession, destroying evidence and resisting an officer without violence.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officers took the dog, and one of their veterinarians later reported it was suffering from malnutrition and anemia.

Animal Care and Control operations manager Capt. David Walesky said today an employee had been caring for the dog, which isn't quite ready for adoption because of treatment for a skin condition.

"He's well-behaved, sweet and gets along with other dogs," Walesky said. "We more than likely will be looking for somebody who is willing to take him for a forever home."
