Hoarding - one animal found dead, 8 more seized
Plattsburgh, NY (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Oct 13, 2009
County: Clinton

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Janie E. Abernathy

Police say they found one dead animal and several others starving inside a Plattsburgh apartment Tuesday afternoon.

Plattsburgh City Police were called to Janie E. Abernathy's home after someone reported the alleged abuse.

When officers arrived, police say, they found seven cats and a dog living in deplorable conditions, with fleas and feces covering the residence.

One cat was found dead.

Police believe the animals had not been fed in several weeks and were confined to the Lakeside Apartments residence at all times.

The animals were removed from the 29-year-old woman's apartment, which has since been deemed uninhabitable.

Abernathy is now facing eight misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. She was still in custody late Tuesday afternoon, awaiting arraignment on the charges.

The surviving animals were being evaluated and treated at Eagle's Nest Veterinary Hospital.

Police said a necropsy will be conducted on the dead cat to determine its cause of death.
