Horse neglect
Weaverville, NC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009
County: Buncombe

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Billy Hoffman, Jr.

Buncombe County sheriff's deputies arrested a city man charged with neglecting two horses on his property.

Billy Hoffman Jr., 56, faces two counts of animal cruelty. He was released on $4,000 bond.

According to documents filed Friday at the Buncombe County Magistrate's Office, an animal control officer first responded in late July to Monticello Road to investigate a report of a neglected horse. The officer returned to the property a few weeks later and noticed the horse had lost more weight and had an injury on one of its front legs, according to the document. The officer ordered the man to have a veterinarian examine the horse within a week. The man had the horse moved to a barn on his property on Harbinger Way.

The officer returned Wednesday and reported the horse had lost more weight and had no food. The officer also found another horse on the property in poor condition.

Deputies seized those two horses and another one from the property Thursday.
