The Tennessee Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has issued warrants against a Madison County couple after 14 dogs were seized from their Spring Creek property Thursday.
Animal cruelty charges are pending, said Deborah Lowrance, of the state SPCA.
Lowrance said Friday the living conditions of the 14 dogs and four horses found on the property were inhumane. The horses should be removed Monday or Tuesday, she said.
Lowrance said the SPCA was investigating a call from one of the property owners about dead dogs on the property when the distressed animals were found. The remains of two dogs and one miniature horse were also found, according to Lowrance.
"A couple of dogs (on the property) were living in old kennels, with (a high) level of dog poop and urine and no food whatsoever," she said Friday. "In the backyard, others were living in a lot of feces with no food and water."
A special statute allows the SPCA to obtain search warrants and file charges in local courts. The Madison County Sheriff's Department assisted the SPCA Thursday.
Sheriff David Woolfork said the department's investigation is still ongoing, and no charges had been filed Friday.
