Dog locked in hot car
Brea, CA (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jul 25, 2009
County: Orange

Charges: Summary
Disposition: Civil penalty imposed

Abuser names unreleased

Brea police issued a citation to a Fullerton man for confining his Dalmatian inside a parked, dark blue SUV while shopping in Wal-Mart over the weekend, Sgt. Bill Smyser said.

A passerby called police at 6:20 p.m. Saturday after noticing the dog unattended inside the vehicle, Smyser said.

Police arrived at 6:22 p.m. and waited 18 minutes until the man showed up at the vehicle.

Police don't know how long the dog was left in the car before being seen by the passerby, Smyser said.

The 50-year-old man was cited for "confining an animal in an unattended vehicle in conditions that endanger the animal because of heat, cold or inadequate ventilation," Smyser said.

Smyser said the case will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office for consideration and the suspect could be fined up to $100 if found guilty.

"The outside temperature was 76 degrees, but you can add 15 to 20 degrees if the windows are rolled up," Smyser said.
