Cockfighting - 40 birds seized
Industry, CA (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Aug 1, 2009
County: Los Angeles

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

An anonymous tip led L.A. County Sheriff's deputies to a cockfight in the City of Industry. One hundred people were detained and more than 40 birds were seized during the bust Saturday night.

One person has been arrested and several others have been cited for attending the cockfight.

An anonymous caller tipped off L.A. County Sheriff's deputies just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday. They arrived on scene before the fighting got underway.

Animal control officers did not find any dead birds or blood in the ring that was set up inside a warehouse on the 200 block of South Waddington Way.

Investigators say approximately 100 people had gathered to watch the fights. They were detained for questioning.

Animal control officers removed 40 to 50 roosters from the warehouse that had been destined for the ring.

"We'll hold them and take them to the back to the shelter. Our veterinarians will check them out for any serious injuries. If they are severely injured they will be put down. And the ones that are not severely injured will be held for evidence to prosecute the people who were doing the rooster fighting," Bill Dolben of animal control said.

The sheriff's department says that the warehouse that was being used for the cockfight was empty. The person who has been arrested is being charged with burglary.
