Four dogs neglected, emaciated Medford, NY (US)Incident Date: Thursday, May 28, 2009 County: Suffolk
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Donna Mungo
When a Medford woman brought an emaciated dog to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and claimed it was a stray, there apparently was something about the dog she didn't know, Suffolk police said Thursday [July 30, 2009].
A Coram pet store had embedded a microchip beneath the skin of the dog, Axel, when it sold the 1-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback to the woman, Donna Mungo. She was charged Wednesday [July 29, 2009] with torturing and injuring Axel and three other dogs at her home by failing to feed them properly, police said.
The dogs are regaining their health at the Brookhaven shelter, a town spokesman said Thursday. It was unclear when or if they will be put up for adoption.
Mungo, 46, brought Axel to the Brookhaven shelter May 28 and filled out a form in which she said he was a stray, police said.
Animal control officers scanned Axel with an electronic device and found the microchip, which led them to the pet store. Workers there said Mungo had bought Axel, said Det. Sgt. Darrell Dabe of the Fifth Squad.
A detective found three other dogs at Mungo's house on June 16, police said. The dogs - Debbie, a border collie; Lenny, a Labradoodle, and Chip, a chow mix - were in poor health and had varying degrees of flea dermatitis, police said.
The dogs were taken to the Brookhaven shelter, police said.
Mungo was charged Wednesday with second-degree offering a false instrument for filing and four counts of failing to provide proper sustenance under the state agriculture and markets law, all misdemeanors.
Mungo will be arraigned at a later date. She could not be reached for comment Thursday. References« NY State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Suffolk County, NY
