A St. Charles family woke up Tuesday morning to find their two dogs dead from gunshot wounds.
St. Charles Police Chief Kevin McInerney said the incident occurred in the 100 block of West Walnut Street. The owners reported hearing gunshots around midnight, McInerney said.
The two dogs, both mixed breeds, had been chained in the owner's backyard.
Along with animal cruelty charges, McInerney said, the perpetrator could face charges for firing a weapon inside the village limits.
St. Charles Police are currently investigating the incident, but do not yet have any suspects in the case.
