Sheep neglect
Harlan, IA (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jul 17, 2009
County: Shelby

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Darvin Lund

A 55-year-old Harlan man has been charged with 50 counts of failure to dispose of dead animals as well as two counts of animal neglect, following an investigation by local authorities last week.

Darvin Lund was taken into custody last week and transported to the Shelby County Jail. He posted $1,300 cash bond on the charges and was released.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the department investigated a report of animal neglect and failure to dispose of dead animals in a proper manner on July 17. Officers from the sheriff's department as well as enforcement personnel with the Shelby County Environmental Health Department allegedly viewed livestock (sheep), approximately 40 head at 945 Redbud Road in Harlan.

On the property deputies allegedly viewed approximately 12 sheep carcasses throughout the property, all in a decomposition state. In addition, deputies that day also viewed several sheep at 1812 Nishna Ave. Sheep at the location also lacked food and water, and approximately 40 dead sheep carcasses were located throughout the property.

Through the investigation, authorities learned that the sheep belonged to Lund, who was subsequently charged. The failure to dispose of dead animal charges are serious misdemeanors, while animal neglect charges are simple misdemeanors. Lund is accused of failing to provide food and water at both locations.
