Malnourished dog found with embedded collar
Tom Bean, TX (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jul 17, 2009
County: Grayson

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

A Grayson County couple has been charged with animal cruelty, after police discovered a puppy with a large gash around its neck.

Children who were riding their bicycles discovered the injured and malnourished puppy at Tom Bean Elementary School.

They got the attention of a Tom Bean police officer who was patrolling the neighborhood.

Officer Daniel Moores says the gash was at least an inch wide and a half inch deep around the dog's neck. Neighbors told police where the dog came from, a house about 100 yards from the school.

"I couldn't believe that somebody would not know that that animal was suffering from some type of injury, unless they weren't giving it any attention," said Officer Moores.

Moores brought the dog to the Rainbow Bridge Animal Rescue shelter in Bonham.

The president of the organization, Thoa Allen, says a few days later and the dog, who she has named Star, would have been dead. "To do it on purpose and to watch her sit there in pain is what kills me," said Allen.

The folks at the shelter say once Star is healthy, they'll put her up for adoption and find her a new home.
