Puppy bound, thrown into pond to drown
Cary, NC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jul 15, 2009
County: Wake

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jahmal Hakeem Clark

Police charged an 18-year-old this week with felony animal cruelty after witnesses said he taped the mouth and legs of a puppy and threw it in a pond to drown.

Fortunately, several people saw what was happening and saved the German shepherd mix, Cary Police Capt. Michael Williams said Friday.

Jahmal Hakeem Clark of 1108 Alston Village Lane attacked the puppy Wednesday at the Alston Village apartment complex near N.C. 55 and Interstate 540 in Cary, according to a report filed by Detective T.J. Stewart.

Witnesses told police that Clark tried to torture and attempted to kill the puppy by taping its legs and mouth together to restrict its ability to breathe and swim. Then, police say, Clark threw the puppy into a nearby pond.

Several neighbors fished the dog out, Williams said. They removed the duct tape and took the puppy to the Animal Emergency Clinic of Cary, according to a police incident report. Efforts to reach officials at the clinic Friday were unsuccessful.

David Jonathan Willett, 26, of 1106 Austin Village Lane was one of the people who helped to save the puppy from drowning. Willett did not want to talk about the incident.

"Plain and simple, a dog was being thrown into a pond, and we saved it," Willett said.

Clark remained in custody Friday afternoon at the Wake County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, a jail spokeswoman said.
