Cat doused in gasoline, set on fire
Clifton, CO (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jul 19, 2009
County: Mesa

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Mesa County Animal Services says they've seen more cases of animal abuse this month than all of last year.

A cat was recently brought into the Roice-Hurst Humane Society in Clifton. They say the cat was soaked in gasoline and then lit on fire. He's now left with the scar across his neck.

Officials are clueless as to the cause of animal abuse. They say most likely it's the change in the economy. But that still doesn't explain the wide variety of abuse they've seen.

"We're seeing starvation, dehydration, just basic neglect, leaving the animals out with no human interaction whatsoever... just all sorts of stuff we've been seeing and it's just really really sad," said Mariah Miller of the Roice-Hurst Humane Society.

If you can no longer care for your cat or dog, there are places than can help. Local pet stores like petsmart and petco are not a place you can drop off your animal.
