Hoarding - dogs and rabbits seized
Spring Valley, MN (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, May 28, 2009
County: Fillmore

Charges: Misdemeanor, Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Mary Grabau
» Lyle Lyndon Grabau

Two Spring Valley residents have been charged with 10 counts of animal neglect and one count of public nuisance for allegedly having dead animals in their house and neglecting other animals.

Charlene Mary Grabau, 45, and Lyle Lyndon Grabau, 47, were charged June 15 in Fillmore District Court. Two charges are felonies, two are gross misdemeanors and the rest are misdemeanors.

According to the complaint, the Spring Valley City Council ordered a cleanup of their house because of violations of the city's junk ordinance. On May 28, two deputies went to the house and smelled the odor of dead animals and saw two dogs in poor condition. They found several dead animals, including four cats and four rabbits.

Deputies got a search warrant for the house, but Lyle Grabau didn't want deputies to go into the home, according to the complaint. He reportedly offered to bring out the animals.

Two deputies put on protective gear, forced their way into the house and encountered a messy house, a strong odor of ammonia and a rabbit in an aquarium without food or water.

Two dogs were taken to a veterinarian for treatment, including shaving off hair that was matted with feces and mud.
