more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

A man and woman have been charged with animal cruelty after two dogs and a cat were found at a Kerhonkson home Saturday severely emaciated.

The man, German Ruiz, 20, of 48 Samsonville Road in Kerhonkson, was charged with two felonies of aggravated animal cruelty and two misdemeanor charges of abandonment of animals.

The woman, Cassandra Ronk, 18, of 62 Shivertown Road in New Paltz, was charged with one count of abandonment of animals, a cat.

The dogs, a boxer and a box-pit mix, were administered emergency care at the Ulster SPCA offices.

The couple claimed they were not able to get food for the dogs and instead of reaching out to community members, they chose to abandon them, said SPCA supervisor of Humane Law Glenn Daniels.

Case Updates

A Kerhonkson man was sentenced to three years probation in Rochester Town Court after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty under state Agriculture and Markets law.

German Ruiz, 21, was arrested last July by investigators from the Ulster County SPCA.

As a special condition of the court, Ruiz was ordered not own or possess any animals during the full term of his probation.

“This man recklessly abandoned two dogs to starve while under his care,” said SPCA Executive Director Brian Shapiro. “We’re encouraged that Ruiz will be closely monitored by Ulster County Probation.”

Both dogs were brought to the UCSPCA last summer where they received emergency medical care due to their unstable condition.

One dog, a female boxer mix, has been rehabilitated and remains available for adoption at the SPCA shelter in Kingston.

According to the Ulster County SPCA website, the sad story of two severely starved dogs and a cat is still an ongoing case in the Town of Rochester.

"German Ruiz, 20, of 48 Samsonville Road, Kerhonkson, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two misdemeanor charges of abandonment of animals under state Agriculture and Markets law.

Cassandra Ronk, 18, of 62 Shivertown Road, New Paltz, was also charged with misdemeanor abandonment of animals.

The dogs, now named Gus and Tigger, were taken to the SPCA shelter for emergency medical care. They have gained weight, though the two remain on a restricted diet, still recovering from this cruel and life threatening ordeal."
