Dog-fighting - 4 dogs seized Delta, CO (US)Incident Date: Monday, Jun 22, 2009 County: Delta
Charges: Felony CTA Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Jose Mario Felix
Jose Mario Felix, 22, of Delta has been charged with animal fighting, possession of a dangerous or illegal weapon, or unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon. He was arrested June 22, after an anonymous caller reported several people were standing in a circle around some dogs which were fighting.
Officer Tim Glass and Sgt. Jesse Stanford responded to the basketball court behind the church at 860 Crawford Avenue at about 8 p.m.
According to an arrest affidavit filed in the Delta Combined Court, the officers found four individuals and four pit bulls at the scene. None were leashed. Two of the individuals responded to Sgt. Stanford's request to leash their dogs. Felix allegedly held two others around their necks. When he was again asked to put his dogs on a leash, he released the dogs and they allegedly began circling the officers. Sgt. Stanford called for additional units and three sheriff's deputies responded.
The officers had unholstered their tasers and their pepper spray as a defense against the dogs, which continued to circle them aggressively. According to the affidavit, Officer Glass had returned his pepper spray to his holster and was reaching for his firearm when Felix gained control of his dogs and placed collars on them.
Felix said the dogs were playing, but the officers observed blood on two of the animals. As they were taking Felix into custody, they located a gravity (butterfly) knife in Felix's right shoe. Animal fighting is a felony; possession of an illegal weapon is a misdemeanor. References- Delta County Independent - July 1, 2009
