On Tuesday March 17, 2009, Ardmore Police Department responded to a Animal Cruelty complaint. Officer Justin Eastwood was advised by Ardmore Communications that an individual was dragging a dog behind his bicycle.

Communications advised several individuals had reported seeing the man pulling the dog in the 1900 block of Refinery Road. Officer Eastwood and Animal Control Officer Chris Miller met with the alleged suspect later identified as Antonio Ray.

Animal Control Officer Miller immediately took control of the injured pit bull and transported the dog to the Animal Shelter. The dog died before any treatment could be attempted. Officer Eastwood gathered information for the investigation.

Ray was later taken into custody by Officer Eastwood and transported to the Carter County Detention Facility. Antonio Isiah Ray, B-M, Dob: 11-30-1971 was arrested for Animal Cruelty. Charges will be forwarded to the Carter County District Attorneys office for review and determination.

The Ardmore man accused in the dragging death of a pit bull dog had his first day in court Wednesday in Carter County. Antonio Ray was arrested last March after officials say he was dragging a dog behind him while riding his bike down a residential road. Austin Wright has more.

Antonio Ray arrived bright and early to face his first day of trial at the Carter County Courthouse in Ardmore. He is charged with felony cruelty to an animal in the dragging case that fatally wounded his pit bull last March. The violent nature in which this dog was killed has several community members hoping the court throws the book at Ray.

"It's pretty unsettling. I'm pretty sure they'll work it out in there, and whatever they come up, with I'm sure it will fit the crime if he is convicted, but it's why we're here today," Detective John Randolph of the Ardmore Police Department says.

Authorities say Ray thought the dog was becoming more trouble than it was worth. While allegedly trying to deliver the dog to the city pound, a couple spotted Ray riding his bike down Refinery Road with the dog dragging behind.

The dog had been dragged for nearly a quarter mile, causing massive trauma to its paws and chest. Randolph says even though it happened back in spring the case still stands out.

"There was a report from neighbors that an individual was pedaling a bicycle and dragging a red pit bull behind his bicycle. The animal was actually tied off around the neck and was actually being drug by the individual."

The case has drawn national attention. We even found a petition found online with nearly 7,000 signatures requesting Ray receive the maximum sentence allowed by law, which is 5 years in state prison.

A dog was dragged to death behind a bike and Thursday the man accused of the cruelty faced a judge in Ardmore.

"He couldn't hold his head up, its tongue was hanging out the side, the pads of its feet were ripped off, just dangling and there were piles of blood," witness John Rhodes said.

Pictures of the dog were part of a preliminary hearing for Antonio Ray in a Carter County courtroom where he was charged with animal cruelty.

The incident happened in March along a road where police say Ray dragged a pit bull with his bicycle for a quarter mile, leaving behind a bloody trail. John Rhodes saw what happened and stopped Ray.

"He said he was taking it to the pound because it kept jumping over the fence," Rhodes said.

Ardmore Animal Control transported the dog to a local animal shelter where it later died. Carter County District Attorney Craig Ladd said the case is unique.

"Sometimes we see cases where animals are neglected, obviously this case is different because the allegations involved some pretty serious abuse," said Carter County District Attorney Craig Ladd.

Ray remained free on bond Thursday night and the arraignment is scheduled for August 12 at the Carter County courthouse.

If Ray is convicted, he could face up to five years in jail for animal cruelty.
