An investigation of animal cruelty was launched Wednesday after the gruesome discovery of canine carcasses in south Fulton County. Animal control is now trying to determine if the dogs were used for fighting and then dumped at that location.
"The first thing I thought was dog fighting and animal cruelty," said a woman who asked not to be identified.
The woman said she discovered several dead pit bulls while she was looking at a parcel of land up for sale.
"You could tell they were pit bulls and so your first assumption is they were dogs that were fought and died and were brought here to basically be dumped and hidden," said the woman.
The parcel of land where the dogs were found is littered with old tires and other dumped objects and is located at the end of Old National Way, near Old National Highway.
Right next to the pile of three pit bulls was the carcass of another dog that had been there a lot longer.
Fulton County police and Fulton County Public Works workers arrived and removed the dogs. The stench was so bad that one worker had to back up and cover his face.
The animals were taken to Fulton County Animal Control center to where workers will try and determine why the dogs were dumped.
"I'm going to let animal control do what they're going to do in terms of trying to get any indication if there was neglect or fighting involved," said Captain Darryl Halberton of the Fulton County Police Department.
