Case Updates

A jury was selected Tuesday for the trial of a woman accused of animal abuse and neglect involving her horses.

Six women and seven men will hear the case of Jennifer Ann Richey, 36, beginning Thursday in Cheboygan County 53rd Circuit Court.

Richey, who also goes by the name of Jennifer Ann Hopkinson, has maintained her innocence since five horses were taken from the woman's Orchard Beach Road property in Benton Township in February. An investigation alleged that she failed to adequately provide food, water and shelter for them.

Prospective jurors were asked by Richey's defense attorney, George Tschirhart, if they owned pets or had ever owned or cared for horses.

Nearly all summoned to the jury box stated that they were pet owners, but the only jury candidate who admitted equine ownership was dismissed by Tschirhart.

A woman charged with animal cruelty has until today to post a bond of $1,708 to seek return of four horses confiscated by Cheboygan County Animal Control.

Jennifer Ann Richey, also known as Jennifer Ann Hopkinson, is set for a preliminary examination Monday in Cheboygan County 89th District Court. Five horses were taken from the woman's property after an investigation alleged that she failed to adequately provide food, water and shelter for them.

"On a scale of one to 10, with 10 being a very healthy animal, these horses were rated at two's and three's," said Cheboygan County Humane Society Director Mary Talaske. "One of them was so bad it had to be put down immediately. The other four are in alternative housing."

Talaske said that primary care for the horses was negligent.

"Their water was frozen and they had no food or shelter from the elements," Talaske continued. "There were many issues of neglect here."

If the bond is met, the woman could reclaim the horses once the criminal proceedings are completed.
