A Louisa County Man is going to the VA State Supreme Court to stop the sale of his cattle. Last November Dennis Powell's cows were seized by the county after they appeared to be starving to death. Powell was charged with animal cruelty. He is trying to fight them insisting that he is innocent. 

The county now says they are going to sell off the cattle. County officials tell 8 News that they have already spent over fifty thousand dollars on the care of the cows and that they have every right to sell them in an auction that will take place on Friday.


Case Updates

Dennis Powell, 57, was found guilty of four misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty. Three charges for starving three of his cows. One charge related to the surviving cattle. One hundred of his cattle were seized one year ago after complaints his cows were undernourished and neglected.

Powell was sentenced to one year in jail and fined $500 for starving three of his cows.

Powell said his animals suffered from diseases caused by contaminated water. He said geese had fouled the water which had become low because of drought. Powell said, "I asked all the state vets and tried to get them to come because the cows were sick. They had bad diarrhea."

The prosecutor dismissed Powell's claim stating a farmer who kept animals on the same property that Powell's herd was seized from, reported no health problems with his cattle.
