weak sentence = one star

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Cockfighting - over 100 birds seized
Mulberry, FL (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 29, 2009
County: Polk

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Convicted

Defendants/Suspects:
» Andres Saura Medina
» Alejo Medina

Two men arrested after deputies raided a suspected cockfighting operation in Mulberry earlier this year have been sentenced to probation, court records show.

In January, deputies raided property at 1705 State Road 37 in Mulberry and seized more than 100 roosters after getting a tip about a cockfight that was to take place, according to reports of the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

More than 30 people were arrested in the raid.

Andres Saura Medina, 45, and Alejo Medina, 57, were accused of living at the address, according to the Sheriff's Office.

As part of a plea agreement, Saura Medina pleaded guilty March 24, 2009 to a misdemeanor charge of attending an animal fight.

Circuit Judge Mark Carpanini sentenced Saura Medina to a year of probation and a $100 fine. The judge withheld adjudication, a formal finding of guilt.

Medina pleaded guilty March 31 to misdemeanor charges of attending an animal fight and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Circuit Judge James Yancey sentenced Medina to a year of probation and a $500 fine. The judge withheld adjudication, a formal finding of guilt.

Prosecutors dropped remaining charges of possessing fighting and baiting equipment against the men.

Chip Thullbery, a spokesman with the State Attorney's Office in Bartow, said negotiations went forward with the men because of their lack of a prior criminal history, and their sentences were similar to those given to others charged in the raid.
